How SCCA's "Formula A" Changed Kiwi Motorsport Forever

Presented by Trevor Lister, this episode of The Logbook, our History of Motorsports series, discusses the impact of Formula A in New Zealand's motorsports scene during the late 1960s. He offers a detailed account of the introduction and evolution of Formula A racing cars. Initially emerging from the SCCA's allowance of stock block engines, Formula A quickly gained popularity in New Zealand after a demonstration by four SCCA teams in December 1968. The transition from older Tasman Formula cars to the new Formula A vehicles brought thrilling and competitive racing to local tracks, particularly the new circuit at Mount Maunganui. Supported by new local builds and a mix of international drivers, Formula A cars became a staple in New Zealand racing until around 1976, when they were eventually supplanted by Formula B/Pacific cars.
