TL:DR - What does Lord Grantham drive? The Cars of Downton Abbey.
Wednesday Oct 25, 2023
Wednesday Oct 25, 2023
"He's nice. He likes cars, and he's mad about you. I rest my case." - says Tom Branson to Lady Mary about Henry Talbot. Initially, I figured… meh! - Downton Abbey is going to be some stuffy pre-war British soap drama, it’ll be just OK, I’ll give it an episode or two. But I found myself rather enamored by all aspects of it. The show has its moments of exaggerated drama and bits of upstairs/downstairs… but each episode is packed and feels like a separate movie and not a serial or episodic story. Oh yea, and there's lot of interesting cars in there too!
Articles from the TL:DR mini-series can be found on gtmotorsports.org; and if you'd like early access to these minisodes, be sure to check out our Patreon.

Jon Summers is The Motoring Historian. He was a company car thrashing, technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept sports bike rider. Hailing from California, he collects cars and bikes built with plenty of cheap and fast, and not much reliable. On his show, he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, and motoring travel.
In this episode, Jon talks about a recent road trip in Florida with a rental Prius, sharing his observations and adventures, including a visit to the Daytona Speedway and the Hall of Fame. He provides an in-depth review of driving the Prius, touching on its design, performance, and fuel efficiency. Jon then transitions to his experience at Pebble Beach, detailing the event's structure, the impressive displays by RM Sotheby's, and his visits to various car museums. He reflects on the vintage and modern cars showcased at the event, including Mercedes Benz and historic Formula One vehicles. Jon also touches on the evolving car culture at Pebble Beach, his interactions with attendees, and the legacy of notable car collectors like Don Williams. He concludes with personal anecdotes and observations about the automotive world, making this a rich narrative centered around his passion for motoring.

The Grease Monks of Belmont Abbey College
Thursday Sep 21, 2023
Thursday Sep 21, 2023
Quinn Beekwilder is an assistant professor and coordinator of the Motorsports management degree at Belmont Abbey College. Having come from a decade of working at Charlotte Motor Speedway, he wanted to give back to the Motorsport program at Belmont Abbey that got him there in the first place. He has a unique perspective of being one of the first graduates of the program and is able to address concerns and direct the program for the greater benefit of current students. Motorsports history has always been a passion of Mr. Beekwilder. The approaches he takes to the courses are crafted to focus on the historical development of NASCAR while incorporating experimental activities to support the curriculum. The students refer to Mr. Beekwilder as "the fast van driver."
Dr. Trey Cunningham is associate professor and chair of the Department of Sport and Motorsport Management at Belmont Abbey College. The college offers a four-year undergraduate academic program designed to prepare aspiring professionals and leaders for a career in the motorsport industry. The presentation will discuss Belmont Abbey College's pedagogical approach to introducing and reinforcing the history of motorsports throughout the entire curriculum. Moreover, Dr. Cunningham's presentation will discuss the many perceived lessons learned and ever-evolving adjustments made along the way in the Department's efforts to successfully prepare students to become lifelong learners of the history of Motorsports.

The Vicari Auction Company
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
Our guests' love for cars started at a young age when he bought his first classic car, a 1940 Ford Coupe, for just $20. Working alongside his brothers-in-law to restore it, he got hooked on classic car ownership and restoration. His passion for Corvettes was ignited when he traded in a sensible Oldsmobile for a '66 Corvette convertible during his college years. However, he had to sell it when family responsibilities called.
Pete Vicari became heavily involved in the auto auction scene, starting with local sponsorship and eventually establishing the Vicari Auction Company. Today, the company employs professional auctioneers and holds annual auctions in conjunction with events like Cruisin' the Coast, And he is here with us tonight to tell us all about it.

The Traveling Larry - Two miles, too many!
Tuesday Sep 19, 2023
Tuesday Sep 19, 2023
It was a crisp autumn day when our guests' world came crashing down around him. He had been running his small business for years, pouring his heart and soul into it, only to find that it was on the brink of failure. To make matters worse, his heart had been broken by the woman he thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with.
Feeling lost and alone, Larry Debenedictis knew he needed to get away from it all. He needed to clear his head and figure out what his next move was going to be. And that's when he decided to embark on a journey that would take him across the country on the back of his motorcycle.
As he rode farther and farther west, something began to shift inside of him. He started to feel the weight of his problems lift off his shoulders, and the road began to feel like a place of solace and healing. The sights and sounds of the American landscape became his companions. The vast open spaces of the Midwest, to the winding roads of the West Coast all became part of his journey. Slowly but surely, Larry began to find his own way forward and he’s here to share his adventure with us.
