Daniel J. Simone (Moderator for this Roundtable) earned his Ph.D. in History from this University of Florida. He then taught at Monmouth University before serving as curator at the NASCAR Hall of Fame from 2016-2021. Dr. Simone is on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Voting Committee and delivers presentations and academic papers at universities and automotive museums across the United States and Canada. He currently serves as program assistant at the New York Historical Society Museum & Library, where he is co-processing and researching the Women's Sports Foundation Collection and conducting oral histories and developing content for a digital exhibition.
The Symposium has provided a platform for excellent in-depth and thought-provoking presentations on the successes, struggles, and contributions of unheralded women racers and car owners across various auto racing disciplines. The green flag for this roundtable discussion will wave with panelists (Lauren Goodman, Buz McKim and Chris Lezotte) integrating these prior presentations into a brief historiographical discussion of women in motorsport. From there, the panelists will pull from their multi-disciplinary backgrounds and markedly different professional experiences and discuss why, where, and how they extended the boundaries of women in motorsports history scholarship. Finally, the audience will take the checkered flag with a challenge: to propose new themes and topics for future conversations, with an emphasis on the accomplishments women have made in motorsports without ever owning or taking the wheel behind race car.

As Fun & Friendly, as she is Talented: Lyn Hiner!
Thursday Mar 14, 2024
Thursday Mar 14, 2024
Studying art at the Pratt Institute in New York, our guest ended up working in the business world as the trade show manager for PRI - the Performance Racing Industry. For nearly a decade, she enjoyed everything about the racing industry and learned the value of good business acumen. Those early experiences helped shape the course of Lyn Hiner’s life as she decided to become a professional artist.
To quote artist Rick Delanty - “Lyn Hiner's paintings express the joie de vivre that she so vibrantly embodies in her personality. Whether an abstract study of shape and color, or an emotional impression of land, sky, or sea, Lyn sees through to the essence of what she observes - and more importantly, feels. She describes the world she sees with color, joy, and sensitivity. Her artworks are real life, interpreted through a worshipful lens.”
And she’s here with us on Break/Fix to share her story with YOU!

Jon Summers is the Motoring Historian. He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept sports bike rider. On his show he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new and old cars, driving, motorbikes, motor racing, motoring travel.
In this episode, Jon discusses the cultural and historical significance of Ferrari. He shares personal reflections, emphasizing how movie adaptations shape public perceptions of historical figures, specifically citing Ferrari and Enzo Ferrari's autobiography 'My Terrible Joys' as key influences. Summers critically examines Ferrari's essence through his own experiences, including visiting Maranello and evaluating the brand's unique place in motoring history. He recounts Ferrari’s pivotal moments in racing and design, and also highlights the emotional impact of Ferrari’s cars, comparing them to art and cultural symbols. Formula A: The SCCA’s Gift to the World
Monday Feb 26, 2024
Monday Feb 26, 2024
In the late 60’s New Zealand Motor Racing found itself in a bind. A few years earlier the Tasman Formula had been written to keep the local fleet of older 2.5-litre ex F1 cars in play. But now the more modern Formula 2, and even a few of the National Formula 1600 cc cars, were embarrassing the older ones. Visiting cars from Europe were either bigger engined ex 1.5-litre F1 cars, or new designs for the upcoming 3-litre F1 with capacity reduced engines, leaving Motor Sport New Zealand with a dilemma. Whichever way you looked at it, it was going to be expensive.
The SCCA appears have come to the same conclusion, with a 1967 amendment to their Formula A allowing Stock Block engines. The gate was open for others to do the same. At the last SCCA race of 1968 SCCA teams were approached, by a New Zealand delegation, to demonstrate their cars in New Zealand. Four teams took up the challenge, and the Kiwi’s liked the look of it. Within the year Formula A was a main stream category with Championships for it unfolding in Europe, South Africa, and the Tasman Countries.
This presentation looks at the nitty gritty of that first Kiwi Formula A race, as seen through the eyes of this presenter in 1968.
Trevor Lister holds Degrees from the University of Canterbury in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. On graduation he joined the New Zealand Ministry of Transport, setting and administrating Automotive Safety Standards. This included standards and protocols for the use of gaseous fuels (CNG and LPG) in motor vehicles. He has served as the New Zealand delegate to the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles. This led to Consultancy in South Est Asia and South America. He has built and raced competition cars as well as served as a safety scrutineer for Motor Sport New Zealand and occasionally as Clerk of Course for motorsport events. Now retired from active racing he serves as Editor for the Newsletters of the Classic Motor Racing Club of New Zealand.
