What Should I Buy? - Square Bodies & Round Headlights - The 80s!
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
Heralded as one of the greatest decades in history… when greed was good, Jordache jeans were worn above the belly button, Hair stood on end with the aid of Aquanet, bands like Depeche Mode ushered in a new generation, a next generation of SciFi was born, and cars were seen as superheroes. This the only time where there is a juxtaposition of both analogue and digital while a generation of petrol heads were both living their best lives and early adopters simultaneously.
The Malaise era might have been the start of the “square bodies and round headlights” movement, but the 1980s… oh the 80s! That was the era of MTV, Killer-Bs, Body Kits and a massive evolution in the automotive industry. Where arguably, some of the iconic cars of our generation were born and carry on through today.
And like all What Should I Buy (WSIB) episodes… we have some shopping criteria. This time, we’re going to settle a long standing argument about “Hot Hatches.” What is the actual difference between a shooting brake, liftback, hatchback, wagon and a sports coupe? Our panel of petrol-heads are challenged to solve that mystery as well as find our “first time collector” the best econobox that will make their friends go “where’d you get that?” at the next Cars & Coffee.
Picking up where we left off, the year is… 1983 and there is NO CORVETTE, but instead the world is introduced to GTI. Joining us tonight are veteran WSIB panelists… our 90’s expert Mark Shank, Don Weberg from Garage Style Magazine, William Ross from Exotic Car Marketplace, bowtie man and square body historian Mountain Man Dan, and returning guest Jeff Willis, along with our executive producer: Tania!

Racing to the Clouds: Clive Savacool’s journey to the Peak!
Tuesday Aug 22, 2023
Tuesday Aug 22, 2023
Our guest tonight started his racing career as a teenager with Karts in the ‘90s, moving to the West Coast Star Mazda series racing Formula Mazdas in 2003, where he finished third overall and won rookie of the year in 2006. In 2008, he turned his attention to Motorcycles and started racing with the American Federation of Motorcyclists (AFM) which is the oldest motorcycle road racing club in the United States, founded in 1954, and became an expert licensed racer within one season.
Along with many racing wins and championships in a variety of motorsports, today Clive Savacool finds himself after several decades as a Paramedic and part of the Fire Service, still behind the handlebars of Motorcycles and is a Member of the AFM Board of Directors assisting in overseeing safe and productive operations of the racing club. And he’s here to talk to us about why you should consider going to the track … with your bike!

Tuesday Aug 15, 2023
Join us for a special Break/Fix episode celebrating the International Motor Racing Research Center's (IMRRC) 25th Anniversary, along with 75 years of Watkins Glen, and the 100th LeMans!
The International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC) collects, shares and preserves the history of motorsports. Spanning continents, eras, and race series, the Watkins Glen based IMRRC’s collection embodies the speed, drama and camaraderie of amateur and professional motor racing throughout the world. For 25 years, the Center has welcomed serious researchers and the casual fans alike to share stories of race drivers, race series, and race cars captured on their shelves and walls.
We were very fortunate to speak with the IMRRC during our first Season of Break/Fix where Kip and Rick shared all sorts of stories about the Glen and we’ve been working with them closely over the last 3 years. But this time we want to welcome IMRRC director Mark Steigerwald to celebrate the center's 25th Anniversary with us.

What Should I Buy? - Muscle & Malaise!
Tuesday Aug 08, 2023
Tuesday Aug 08, 2023
Like most enthusiasts in the collector hobby, we are Camaro’d, Cuda’d & Mustang’d out. It's time for something new, time to rediscover the unsung heroes from a period when Square-bodies and round headlights were all the rage!
You asked… we answered. From our latest fan poll, there was an overwhelming consensus that our listeners wanted us to come back for yet another What Should I Buy? (WSIB), this time hyper focusing on the cars from 1964 to 1982. And like all WSIB episodes, we have some shopping criteria. This time, anything goes, as long as it’s not the same ole Muscle & Malaise we see at our local car shows. Our panel of extraordinary petrol-head panelists are challenged to find our “first time collector” something that will make their friends go “where’d you get that?” at the next Cars & Coffee.
Joining us are veteran WSIB panelists… Mark Shank our ‘90s expert, Don Weberg from Garage Style Magazine, and Rob Parr from Collector Car Guide, along with Mountain Man Dan, and special guest Andrew Mason from the Big Man In a Little Car episode!

What is GRIDlife? (Adam Jabaay) #grid.life
Tuesday Aug 01, 2023
Tuesday Aug 01, 2023
When you think about automotive festivals, your imagination probably wanders to visions of flat brim hat-wearing electronic music-pumping social-media junkies who spend as much time, effort and money modifying their vape rigs as they do their lowered extremely cambered suspensions.
Way to stereotype, but… here’s where you’re wrong. GRIDLIFE has many moving parts: There’s a car show, nonstop on-track activities—a rotating mix of drifting, high-performance driving event/(Education) (HPDE) sessions for drivers with various skill levels and compete-against-the-clock time-attack races—plus two evenings’ worth of music and some great food trucks. And joining us tonight is Adam Jabaay co-founder and Motorsports Director for GRIDLIFE to explain how this petrol-filled multi-discipline weekend, festival and lifestyle works and where you fit in.
This episode is part of our ROAD TO SUCCESS SERIES - inspiring stories that help shape the future of the autosphere.

Thursday Jul 20, 2023
Tonight’s guest has created a podcast focused on the people he considers to be part of the same tribe, the tribe of car lovers. His love of cars started at an early age but was really cemented during an internship for Porsche Cars Great Britain. He worked in the PR department helping to launch the 993 Twin-Turbo as well as organizing a film shoot for Top Gear.
Dan Pilling went on to a career in technology where he had the opportunity to mix his passion with a part of his day job working on the technical partnership between Microsoft and the Lotus F1 Team (now known as Alpine) along with working for teams like Williams and Mercedes F1. When he moved to the US he worked with Hendricks Motorsport (Nascar), Honda (Indy Car) and MotoAmerica (Superbikes). Dan is here to tell us all about his journey in the world of Motorsports and how and why he started his new podcast “Danny P on Cars.”
This episode is part of our ROAD TO SUCCESS SERIES - inspiring stories that help shape the future of the autosphere.
