Racing as a Paradigm for Pursuing the Best (Dr. Mario Tecce)

Dr. Mario Felice Tecce received his M.D. and PhD. at the University of Naples, Italy, and is currently full professor of Biochemistry at University of Salerno. Besides his molecular research about cancer mechanisms, he explored race car driving as a major reference paradigm of pursuing the best and of free will exercise. Having a strong interest and deep passion for car racing, he analyzed Formula One seasons of the last 50 years and suggests that race car driving can be a major example of general life choices between good and bad in a joint competition to pursue the best possible.

Racing & Racketeers - Caesars Palace (Las Vegas) Grand Prix

Randall Cannon is a freelance journalist and author. His first book, Stardust International Raceway, explored the convergence of organized crime influences and motorsports interests in the international capital of legalized gambling, Las Vegas. Cannon's current offering, Caesars Palace Grand Prix, drills even more deeply into that nexus while also tracing the threads of history that culminated in the only Formula One events to date in that unique city. Mr. Cannon will present at the Symposium from that research, as well as the incremental steps forward from Caesars Palace that will result in the return of F1 to that destination mecca of gambling, the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Raised in auto-obsessed Los Angeles during the 1960s and ‘70s, our guest spent his youth hanging around the dealerships where his dad sold cars. This experience bred a lifelong interest in both the cars and the business of selling them. He enjoyed a long and successful career first as a sales manager for retail auto sales, and later shifting gears to work in aircraft sales.
Joining the Mecum team in 2006, John Kraman served as the co-director of consignments for Mecum Auctions alongside Frank Mecum. Beginning in 2008 and continuing today, Kraman has been the commentator of Mecum Auctions broadcast on NBC Sports Network, MotorTrend TV and others. And he’s here to tell us all about his fascinating career journey in the world of classic cars and broadcasting.

From the Truck to the Track: Keri Weishaar’s race to the sky in a Semi!

Our guest has had her class A commercial driver's license (CDL) since 2008.  She has logged thousands of highway miles driving across the country.  Some of those include the snow-covered passes of Montana with a loaded 52 foot trailer during winter testing.  She has also been trained and qualified to drive on the durability test track at the Bosch Automotive Proving Grounds as well as the track at the PACCAR Technical Center.  
In addition to her training Keri Weishaar co-drove with Hollywood stunt driver and then 16-year Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competitor Mike Ryan at the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and today finds herself designing safety equipment for Trophy Girl Designs, and she’s here to tell us all about her automotive journey.

I rest my case." - says Tom Branson to Lady Mary about Henry Talbot. Initially, I figured… meh! - Downton Abbey is going to be some stuffy pre-war British soap drama, it’ll be just OK, I’ll give it an episode or two. But I found myself rather enamored by all aspects of it. The show has its moments of exaggerated drama and bits of upstairs/downstairs… but each episode is packed and feels like a separate movie and not a serial or episodic story. Oh yea, and there's lot of interesting cars in there too!

Putting the ”Sports” in Sports Cars

Elton "Skip" McGoun is an emeritus professor of finance at Bucknell University and a visiting professor at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and at the University of Donja Gorija in Montenegro. He has presented and published on the history and culture of finance as well as automotive history and culture and served as area chair of the Vehicle Culture Section of the Popular Culture Association. He considers the two senses of the word "Sports" - competition and recreation - and their relative roles in the creation of the class of vehicles known as "Sports Cars."
